How to Creepify Your Photos for Halloween [Video]

How to Creepify Your Photos for HalloweenHow to Creepify Your Photos for Halloween Whether you want an extra creepy profile picture for your Facebook page, a scary image for your Halloween party invitation, or just want to frighten your friends and family, here are a few image editing techniques that can get your photos ready for Halloween.

Everything is demonstrated in the video above, so be sure to watch for a proper tutorial. For reference, here's the basic how-to for each technique.

How to Creepify Your Photos for Halloween

Evil Eyes

The first technique demonstrated in the video is evil glowing white eyes. This is probably one of the easiest things to accomplish. Just follow these steps:

  1. Set the foreground color to white (or whatever color you want the eyes to be) and grab the pen tool. Use it to trace the shape of the white part of the eyes. Be careful not to draw over the darker parts or the eyelashes. You can always adjust later if you need to.
  2. Double-click the eye shape layer in the layers panel to open the effects panel. Then add an inner shadow with a distance of zero, an opacity of about 75%, and a size of around 3-5 (which should be increased if you're working with a large image).
  3. Still in the effects panel, add an outer glow. Change the color to white or a light blue (or whatever makes sense for your eye color of choice). Change the size to be rather large and the opacity to be around 60%. This will keep the glow fairly minimal so it actually looks like the eyes are glowing and not just really blurry. Depending on the photo, however, you'll want to adjust these settings to look their best.

That's it! Now you have evil glowing eyes.

Spattered and Dripping Blood

In the video you can see blood spatter added to Whitson's teeth and mouth as well as a little bit of blood dripping down his face and neck. This is easy to do. Let's start with the spatter:

  1. Select a brownish-red color as your foreground color and a spatter-like brush from the paintbrush tool. You'll want to switch between the different options and change their sizes regularly to get the best effect.
  2. Paint the blood spatter where you want it.
  3. Set the blood spatter layer's blending mode to overlay.
  4. Duplicate the layer to make it darker (if necessary), and reduce the opacity until you get the right intensity of the blood.

For the dripping blood, follow these steps:

  1. Paint the blood on your subject's face with the pen tool. This gives you a good amount of control when creating smooth curves that fit the contour of the face. You'll want to use the same reddish-brown color you used for the blood spatter.
  2. Double-click the dripping blood shaper layer you just created and add a Gradient Overlay effect. Set its blending mode to Overlay and dial down the opacity to a small number so you can create just a little variation in the color.
  3. You may also want to add very subtle drop and inner shadow effects to the dripping blood to help reduce contrast between it and your subject's face, but use your eyes to determine how much (if anything) is needed.

What will make this look most realistic is if you get the contours right, so be sure the blood looks like it's falling down your subject's face realistically. That's the most important thing when selling a fake blood drip effect.

Create a Darker Color Scheme

If your photo is looking a bit too bright, you should adjust the colors to make it darker. You can do this by creating an Curves, Levels, or Color Balance Adjustment Layer. I like Curves so that's what we're going to be talking about, but the principles are pretty much the same across the board.

  • Bring up the blue levels in the shadows only.
  • Bring up the red levels in the highlights, leave the midtones the same, and reduce the red levels in the shadows.
  • Reduce the green levels in the midtones only.

If you're not sure how to make color adjustments, be sure to watch the video above for a demonstration.

Farrelly Brothers Prepare to Get More Dumb and Dumber

Carrey and Daniels - suiting up for a new round of mayhem?

Credit: New Line Cinema

Though it's been 17 years since the release of "Dumb and Dumber" (which was followed by one godawful prequel, "Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry met Lloyd"), it appears that a sequel to the 1994 comedy hit is now picking up steam, with writer/directors Peter and Bobby Farrelly looking to re-team stars Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels for the follow-up.

Writing team Sean Anders and John Morris ("Mr. Popper's Penguins", "Hot Tub Time Machine") have been hired to write the script for the film, which the Farrellys are eyeing as their next directing project, according to Deadline. The brothers recently wrapped "The Three Stooges" starring Sean Hayes, Will Sasso and Chris Diamantopoulos as the buffoonish trio. That film is slated for release on April 4, 2012.

The Farrellys could certainly use a big hit, and a "Dumb and Dumber" sequel with Carrey and Daniels (who could use a little career heat themselves) would seem a good way to accomplish that (provided fans of the original get on board). The writer/directors' last sizable Stateside success was with 2001's "Shallow Hal"; their subsequent films have performed far more modestly (if not disastrously).

While doing press for "Mr. Popper's Penguins" this summer Carrey hinted that a "Dumb and Dumber"?sequel may happen, but this is the first real concrete news regarding the project.

The original "Dumb and Dumber" grossed nearly $250 million worldwide on a budget of $17 million.

What say you - hankering for more Harry and Lloyd? Sound off in the comments section!

Charlie Sheen slams new "Two and a Half Men" (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? Looks like Charlie Sheen is done playing nice with his former bosses.

The ousted "Two and a Half Men" star, who's preparing for his small-screen adaptation of the Jack Nicholson film "Anger Management," took a few shots at the show while out in Los Angeles on Thursday, saying he's "very disappointed" in the direction "Two and a Half Men" has taken since his ouster, TMZ reports.

Asked about the ratings slide that the show has taken since its eye-popping season premiere numbers, Sheen offered, "People aren't stupid, you know? Not all of them."

Sheen was a critical about his replacement, Ashton Kutcher, who plays brokenhearted Internet millionaire Walden Schmidt on the show.

"He's doing the best he can," Sheen offered. "I don't think the role is cursed, but I'm extremely disappointed with how they're handling what I left behind."

After a very public, very ugly war of words with "Two and a Half Men" executive producer Chuck Lorre, Sheen struck a conciliatory tone at this year's Emmys, taking the stage and wishing his former cohorts "nothing but the best" with the show revamp.

"From the bottom of my heart, I wish you nothing but the best for this upcoming season. We spent eight wonderful years together, and I know you will continue to make great television," Sheen said.

Two weeks later, in late September, Sheen settled his lawsuit with Lorre and Warner Bros. Television. As TheWrap reported at the time, Sheen received $25 million in the deal, though that primarily consists of back-end payments from episodes he'd already filmed. (Sheen had been seeking $100 million in the suit.)

The good news for CBS? Charlie's a big fan of its comedy "Rules of Engagement." The series enjoyed robust ratings for its season premiere Thursday, and apparently Sheen was among the viewers.

"Anyone catch the premier of "Rules of Engagement" last night?" Sheen tweeted Friday. "Glad it's back! Hat's off to buddy Tom Hertz, cast and crew. Great show CBS!!"

Maybe he's trying to make "Two and a Half Men" jealous?

TapSense: Touchscreen technology distinguishes taps by parts of finger

ScienceDaily (Oct. 20, 2011) ? Smartphone and tablet computer owners have become adept at using finger taps, flicks and drags to control their touchscreens. But Carnegie Mellon University researchers have found that this interaction can be enhanced by taking greater advantage of the finger's anatomy and dexterity.

By attaching a microphone to a touchscreen, the CMU scientists showed they can tell the difference between the tap of a fingertip, the pad of the finger, a fingernail and a knuckle. This technology, called TapSense, enables richer touchscreen interactions. While typing on a virtual keyboard, for instance, users might capitalize letters simply by tapping with a fingernail instead of a finger tip, or might switch to numerals by using the pad of a finger, rather toggling to a different set of keys.

Another possible use would be a painting app that uses a variety of tapping modes and finger motions to control a pallet of colors, or switch between drawing and erasing without having to press buttons.

"TapSense basically doubles the input bandwidth for a touchscreen," said Chris Harrison, a Ph.D. student in Carnegie Mellon's Human-Computer Interaction Institute (HCII). "This is particularly important for smaller touchscreens, where screen real estate is limited. If we can remove mode buttons from the screen, we can make room for more content or can make the remaining buttons larger."

TapSense was developed by Harrison, fellow Ph.D. student Julia Schwarz, and Scott Hudson, a professor in the HCII. Harrison discussed the technology on Oct. 19 at the Association for Computing Machinery's Symposium on User Interface Software and Technology in Santa Barbara, Calif.

A video demonstrating the technology's capabilities and possible applications can be viewed at: http://chrisharrison.net/index.php/Research/TapSense.

"TapSense can tell the difference between different parts of the finger by classifying the sounds they make when they strike the touchscreen," Schwarz said. An inexpensive microphone could be readily attached to a touchscreen for this purpose. The microphones already in devices for phone conversations would not work well for the application, however, because they are designed to capture voices, not the sort of noise that TapSense needs to operate.

The technology also can use sound to discriminate between passive tools (i.e., no batteries) made from such materials as wood, acrylic and polystyrene foam. This would enable people using styluses made from different materials to collaboratively sketch or take notes on the same surface, with each person's contributions appearing in a different color or otherwise noted.

The researchers found that their proof-of-concept system was able to distinguish between the four types of finger inputs with 95 percent accuracy, and could distinguish between a pen and a finger with 99 percent accuracy.

The Mega-Video: What?s New In Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0)?

ICS CamSure, other sites might have footage of Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0.) They grabbed a Galaxy Nexus, fumbled with it for a second or two, and then shot 2-3 minutes of video with a device/interface they weren't really familiar with. And that's fine. But I didn't want to do that ? I wanted us to do it right. PFT: Raiders should take a look at Favre

Andy DaltonAP

Cam Newton has been a great story this season, a first overall pick performing even better than expected and putting up huge numbers for the Panthers. But don?t be too quick to coronate Newton as this year?s best rookie quarterback.

Andy Dalton of the Bengals has, like Newton, started every game this season. But unlike Newton, Dalton is putting up good numbers while his team is winning games.

On Sunday against the Colts, Dalton completed 25 of 32 passes for 264 yards, with a touchdown and no interceptions, for a passer rating of 111.5 on the day. It was the third time in six starts that Dalton has had a passer rating above 100, and his passer rating on the season is a solid 84.3. Newton?s passer rating is 78.3.

In terms of fantasy football numbers, Dalton can?t compare to Newton: Newton has 500 more passing yards than Dalton, and Newton also has six rushing touchdowns to Dalton?s one. But Dalton and Newton have the same number of passing touchdowns (seven apiece), and Newton has thrown nine interceptions to Dalton?s five. Dalton?s completion percentage is better than Newton?s as well.

And, of course, there?s the little matter of Dalton leading his team to a 4-2 record, making the Bengals one of the pleasant surprises of the season. Newton has racked up a lot of his big numbers while trying unsuccessfully to bring the 1-5 Panthers back while they were trailing in the second half.

Dalton has only had one really bad game, his two-interception effort in a loss to the 49ers. But aside from the fourth quarter and overtime against Tony Romo, the 49ers? defense has made every quarterback look bad this season. There?s no shame in struggling against San Francisco.

Dalton?s stats also compare favorably to the stats Sam Bradford put up last season while winning the offensive rookie of the year award in St. Louis. And Dalton?s stats compare favorably to the 2010 numbers of Benglas quarterback Carson Palmer, too.

Obviously, Dalton isn?t doing it all himself. The Bengals? 1-2 punch at wide receiver this year, A.J. Green and Jerome Simpson, has been an improvement over last year?s combination of Terrell Owens and Chad Ochocinco. And offensive tackles Andrew Whitworth and Andre Smith are playing very well ? they shut down the Colts? pass-rush combination of Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis.

But Whitworth pointed to Dalton after the game when asked what the difference is for this year?s Bengals.

?And this guy right here made the plays,? Whitworth said. ?Dalton had a heck of a day. It?s all on him. It?s Andre and I?s job to keep people off him. He executed and he did what he had to do and that?s what he continues to. He comes in with a game plan and if things don?t go exactly right he stays with the game plan.?

Dalton has been following the game plan all year. And his production has been even better than the Bengals could have planned.

Global warming a threat to polar bears? Judge orders review of US rule.

A judge rules that the US has met its obligations for protecting polar bears, but ordered a review of a special rule that excludes greenhouse gases from the list of threats to the bears.

A US district court judge in Washington on Monday rejected arguments from environmental groups that the US Department of Interior was failing to protect polar bears because of its refusal to consider greenhouse gases as one of the threats facing the bears.

The environmentalists had hoped that a ruling in their favor would force the government to regulate greenhouse-gas emissions in order to comply with the Endangered Species Act (ESA). Most scientists agree that greenhouse-gas emissions are causing global warming, and that the rising temperatures are leading to the disappearance of Arctic Ocean ice, which is crucial to the health of polar bear populations.

Overall, the ruling highlights the challenge conservation groups can face as they turn to federal regulators to curb greenhouse-gas emissions.

But the judge did order the Interior Department to conduct a thorough environmental review of the rule that allows it to exclude greenhouse gases from its list of threats, noting that the department had failed to do so at the time the rule was initially considered.

Environmental groups had petitioned to have polar bears listed as threatened under the ESA in 2006. But when the Bush administration listed the bears in May 2008, it also adopted a "special rule" the following December.

Under that special rule, the department stipulated that only threats emanating from within the bears' current geographic range would be considered. Since greenhouse gases affecting climate come from sources around the globe, they fell outside the regulatory purview the special rule set.

Four environmental groups joined a lawsuit, holding that the exclusion was arbitrary, capricious, and illegal under the ESA, especially since the bears' listing cited climate change as a threat to the creatures' habitat. The coalition based much of its case on what it saw as the Interior Department's attempt to dodge its responsibility to regulate all threats to the bears, including greenhouse gases.

The Interior Department argued that since the overwhelming majority of greenhouse-gas emissions from human activities originate outside the polar bears' range, and the state of climate science doesn't allow for the level of precision needed to pinpoint and penalize individual emitters, the agency was in no position to add greenhouses gases to its regulatory mix.

In rendering his decision, US District Judge Emmet Sullivan acknowledged the groups' frustration at the lack of federal action to regulate greenhouse gases.

Analysis: Euro zone eyes yet another "comprehensive strategy" (Reuters)

BRUSSELS (Reuters) ? A cloud of gloom hangs over Brussels ahead of yet another summit to thrash out yet another "comprehensive strategy" to tackle a sovereign debt crisis that Europe has failed for two years to stem, and that now threatens the world economy.

Gallows humor was rife among the grandees of European integration at the annual conference of the Friends of Europe think-tank on "the state of the union" last week.

"Hopefully next year we won't be talking about Greek debt," Etienne Davignon, 79, a Belgian former European Commissioner and patriarch of the European project, joked in his closing remarks.

"Either it will have gone or we will have gone."

The opening session was billed as: "The EU's three ages: rise, decline and fall?"

The question mark was the only concession to hope.

Weary cynicism surrounds next Sunday's (October 23) summit of the 27 EU leaders, their sixth attempt this year to draw a line under the euro zone crisis that has led to bailouts of Greece, Ireland and Portugal and is now singeing Italy and Spain.

They trumpeted a "comprehensive response" back in March, but, due mainly to German caution, adopted a catalog of half-measures described by British Prime Minister David Cameron last week as "a bit too little, a bit too late".

In July, with bond market contagion spreading for the first time to Italy, the euro zone's third biggest economy, leaders of the 17-nation single currency area agreed on a second bailout for Greece involving "voluntary" writedowns for private bondholders and more powers for their EFSF rescue fund.

Traders quickly spotted that the accord would take months to implement and might be derailed in any of the 17 national parliaments that had to approve it, or by Greece's failure to achieve its fiscal targets. Confidence evaporated.

Spanish and Italian borrowing costs were driven so high that the European Central Bank had to intervene in emergency in August to buy those countries' bonds and force yields down.

After weeks of bruising debate, first in the German then in the Slovak parliament, and haggling with Finland over its demand for collateral on Greek loans, the beefed-up 440-billion-euro European Financial Stability Facility is finally ready to act.

But the goalposts have moved in the meantime. The situation has deteriorated and more radical action is now required.

MOVING TARGET

Greece has strayed off course again and doubts about whether it will ever be able to repay its debts have hardened as the country has slumped deeper into recession and public resistance to austerity measures has mounted.

Germany and its north European allies are demanding that private bondholders be made to contribute more toward a second rescue for Greece, but still on a "voluntary" basis with no losses for taxpayers or the European Central Bank.

The talk now is of building a firewall around Greece and convincing investors that other euro zone sovereigns are safe, without another ghastly round of ratifications in member states.

The key elements in the latest "comprehensive strategy" are: reducing Greece's debt and giving it longer to recover; bolstering European banks' ability to absorb losses; leveraging the rescue fund to prevent contagion to larger economies; and launching steps toward closer euro zone fiscal integration.

Yet there is scope for each of these elements to fall short, or be overtaken by events, especially with the economic growth outlook darkening as austerity measures cripple demand.

Greek debt relief may be too small to avoid a hard default. Banks may struggle to raise capital and governments fearful for their own credit ratings may equivocate about what to do if they can't raise it on the markets.

Policymakers hope to stabilize the euro zone bond market by using the EFSF to offer partial loss insurance to investors buying new Spanish or Italian bonds.

This may not be enough to restore confidence if Italy's chaotic politics, compounded by the economic slowdown, thwart austerity plans. Markets are bound to test Europe's defences.

Further credit ratings downgrades could exacerbate the crisis. If France's AAA rating were pulled into doubt due to the capital needs of its banks, heavily exposed to peripheral euro zone debt, then the entire rescue strategy could falter.

With so many "ifs", the chances of this "comprehensive strategy" being the one that does the trick are anything but certain.

Pressure for decisive action from other major economies, which dominated last weekend's G20 finance chiefs' meeting in Paris, may improve the Europeans' chance of success.

The world's treasuries and central banks are so alarmed at the risk of a financial meltdown that they may be ready to pile in to support even a shaky European plan.

European policymakers still reject the nuclear option of a mandatory restructuring of Greek debt, which would trigger a "credit event" with the payment of default insurance and send a shockwave through the financial sector.

Instead, private bondholders face a bigger "voluntary" writedown of up to 50 percent while euro zone governments and the ECB are shielded from losses on Greek debt to avoid a public backlash that would make further rescue measures impossible.

It is easier for European politicians to support banks that are unable to raise private capital than it would be to admit they had poured taxpayers' money down a Greek hole.

Radical solutions such as using the ECB as Europe's lender of last resort or issuing joint euro zone bonds, are politically taboo in Germany.

Barring such game-changers, expect the euro zone debt crisis to rumble on and on, if it doesn't explode.

(Writing by Paul Taylor, editing by Mike Peacock)

Sprint says the iPhone 4S, 4 add up to its best 'device family' launch ever (Update: AT&T too)

After ignoring and teasing the iPhone, Sprint has its own Apple handsets to sell and apparently its customers have responded to the iPhone 4 and 4S. A press release just went out calling this Sprint's "best ever day of sales in retail, web and telesales for a device family" -- hopefully they double checked the numbers this time -- in the company's history, as of 1PM ET. Predictably, Sprint's unlimited data pricing compared to other carriers is being credited for the (unspecified) new high water mark in sales. Check the release itself after the break for the rest of the victory lap, but we'll wait for actual numbers before deciding on the big winner of today's launch.

Update: AT&T just couldn't let Sprint hog the moment, sending out its own missive claiming the company "activated a record number of iPhones on our network - and is on-track to double our previous record for activations on a single day". It's included after the break, and of course we'll let you know when / if Verizon fires a few shots off in celebration.

213 Ventures Deploys Ctuit RADAR for Business Intelligence : e ...

Ctuit-SoftwareCtuit Software, a leader in business intelligence software for restaurants, announced that 213 Ventures, the premier purveyor of LA nightlife entertainment, implemented Ctuit RADAR in its locations including Seven Grand and Las Perlas. The web-based solution enables restaurant management to access and generate reports on the daily operations, including sales, inventory, and payroll, of the business.
With RADAR, 213 management has consistent sales reports across its locations which are generated easily and instantaneously. The solution enables payroll processing to be streamlined and more accurate. FSBO and leaving behind agents | Le Blog des Services ? Domicile

FSBO stands for when a house is for sale by proprietor. By choosing to specifically purchase a house that?s FSBO your assisting in making someone?s life infinitely simpler and supporting them in their choice to represent themselves independently devoid of the aid of a real estate agent. It?s a challenging job attempting to sell your property all by oneself and houses FSBO get different kind of coverage. When a property gets to be FSBO it means that all the ad space on-line, in newspapers, and possibly certain personal publications have to be located solely by the proprietor and they have to understand a totally new trade.Web sites devoted to FSBO homes aren?t as well recognized and a lot of folks just assume that the only selection for selling a home is Real Estate companies. Looking into selling a FSBO home usually means cultivating representation on at least half-a-dozen web sites geared particularly toward your desires. Some individuals searching to purchase a new home go months devoid of seeing a single area of interest and expanding your choices to FSBO homes increases your opportunity of locating a dream home.

A number like six or seven percent might not sound significant, but given that houses sell on average for at the very least a hundred thousand dollars, Realtors walk away with a good six thousand of what?s rightfully yours. Deciding to sell FSBO removes these high percentages, and deciding on to purchase from the FSBO community means actually assisting to help someone who thinks likewise. FSBO guarantees that you?re talking directly to the owner of a property, which is also great. An agent?s commission generally entails a lot of work like presenting, and perhaps improving the house for you, but there?s no reason that somebody who chooses FSBO can?t do these same things. Inevitably the biggest aspect of an agent?s commission will have next to nothing to do with the price of repairing or presenting property to interested parties. People who decide to promote their house FSBO will end up possibly saving thousands or tens of thousands of dollars. Homes FSBO need increased patience, and additional duty, but FSBO homes also pay off much more in the end if you?re willing to accept those responsibilities.FSBO offers are growing in popularity and continuing to show themselves to be a lot more efficient or at least possessing potential. FSBO deals actually make up as much as twenty two percent of all transactions on the real estate marketplace in the US, and twenty five of all transactions in Canada. FSBO transactions may not make up the vast majority of the market but these numbers will undoubtedly continue to develop. It?s unlucky that more people don?t want to take on the responsibilities of selling FSBO, but it?s most definitely not an underground or unheard of strategy of executing business. The simple reality is that selling FSBO is challenging and demands patience and determination, nevertheless it is beneficial and a great solution to consider. FSBO means you have all the chips and you need to make all the choices. Some look at this as daunting, while others see it as empowering. How you see FSBO is entirely up to you, and if they simply aren?t a good alternative for you and your current requirements, then at least there?s always a opportunity that FSBO might suit you and your needs in the long run.I enjoy writing things for fun that may be of benefit to others, and occasionally write short stories too. Just a college student at the moment, nothing professionaly.

National Cancer Institute renews UAB Comprehensive Cancer ...

By Beena Thannickal

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ? The University of Alabama at Birmingham Comprehensive Cancer Center has received a five-year, $27.5 million Cancer Center Support Grant from the National Cancer Institute to renew support for its cancer research program through 2016.? The UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center will receive more than $5.4 million per year to support six research programs, plus 14 shared facilities and services.

The Cancer Center Support Grant is the most prestigious federal grant that can be earned by an institution with significant cancer research and patient-care programs. The renewal also extends UAB?s elite ?comprehensive? designation, which is characterized by scientific excellence and the ability to integrate diverse research approaches in the fight against cancer.

The UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center is one of the original NCI-designated centers created when President Richard Nixon signed the National Cancer Act in 1971; it is one of only 40 NCI-designated comprehensive cancer centers in the United States, and the only one in Alabama and the Deep South region.

Additionally, the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center received a new Specialized Program of Research Excellence grant in brain cancer for $2.3 million from the National Institutes of Health to develop new therapies to treat brain tumors. UAB is one of few centers in the United States with four SPORE programs ? brain, breast and pancreatic cancers, and a shared grant with Johns Hopkins for cervical cancer.

?This truly is a transformative time for the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center,? says Director Edward Partridge, M.D. ?With this renewal and a new state-of-the-art research facility soon to be completed, we are in a position to advance cancer knowledge even further and provide world-class specialized cancer care to our patients. We?ve undergone a rigorous renewal process, and at a time when funding is extremely limited this grant fuels our efforts in cancer prevention and treatment.?

The NCI requires comprehensive cancer centers to demonstrate depth and breadth in laboratory, clinical and population-based research, with programs that bridge all three areas.? A comprehensive cancer center also must provide outreach, education and information on cancer to the community. To maintain NCI-designated comprehensive status, each institution must undergo an intensive and rigorous review of these programs by an NCI site team every five years.

During this most recent review, the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center received an excellent rating during the highly competitive, peer-reviewed selection process and was recognized for the special emphasis it places on cancer health disparities and translational therapeutics ? the ability to move research findings from the laboratory bench to the patient bedside.

?This NCI renewal grant validates the value of the innovative work that we are conducting at UAB,? says Ray L. Watts, M.D., senior vice president for Medicine and dean of the UAB School of Medicine.

?It is a direct testament to our team of 350 scientists and physicians who are working every day to address all aspects of cancer, from understanding how it begins, to developing new treatments to prevent and conquer the disease and testing them in clinical trials, to providing exceptional patient care and support to patients and their families.?

A world leader in developing innovative monoclonal antibody approaches to cancer therapy, the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center conducts clinical trials using engineered monoclonal antibodies alone or armed with a payload of immunotoxins, chemotherapy drugs or radioactive isotopes to specifically target a broad array of cancers, including breast, gastrointestinal tract, lung, ovary, head and neck, brain tumors and lymphomas.

In recent years, UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center researchers have made several exciting breakthroughs:

? Identifying a genetic link between obesity and colon cancer risk

? Setting the standard of care for head-and-neck cancer treatment

? Reversing health disparities with breast-cancer screening among under-served populations in Alabama and Mississippi

? Discovering a set of four biomarkers that help predict the likelihood patients will develop aggressive colorectal cancer

? Conducting first stages of Phase I trials in humans using UAB-30, a cancer-fighting retinoid that was engineered at UAB

About the Comprehensive Cancer Center

The UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center is among the 40 cancer centers in the nation to meet the stringent criteria for the National Cancer Institute?s comprehensive designation. The center is a leader in groundbreaking research, reducing cancer disparities and leading-edge patient care.

Must See HDTV (October 3rd - 9th)

How can we still have fall premieres left? After the onslaught of the last two weeks it seems there's still a few to go, as old standbys like House join fresh faces like American Horror Story and Penn & Teller Tell a Lie on the premiere list. It's also a big week for Blu-ray discs, as seen above with a couple of classics showing up, some Disney favorites returning for the first time and special treats like Daft Punk's Interstella 5555 and Planet Earth Special Edition. Look below for the highlights this week, followed after the break by our weekly listing of what to look out for in TV, Blu-ray and videogames.

Pulp Fiction
After waiting far too long for Quentin Tarantino's hit movie to debut on Blu-ray we got an early look at this one and it's worth the wait. Both the picture and audio quality are impressive, while we didn't have a copy of the imported version to compare them to the picture is clean and artifact free, while the 5.1 soundtrack gives equal time to the witty dialogue and occasional action. There's no audio commentary present, but there is about an hour or so of new HD extras included for the fans. If you've somehow avoided seeing this movie so far we don't even know what to say to you, but this is the best way to watch since it debuted in 1994.
($15.99 on Amazon, October 4th)

House
Everyone's favorite jerk of a doctor returns for an eighth and possibly final season tonight. With Cuddy gone and Dr. Gregory House locked in jail we're wondering if it can keep the medical procedural formula fresh for another year, but so far it's held up well despite cast rotations and the so often under-appreciated main-character-loses-his-mind plot twist. Don't have enough reasons to watch? Jaleel White is guest starring in tonight's season premiere episode, so there you go.
(October 3rd, Fox, 9PM)

The League
If you've listened to our podcast or are participating in either of the official Engadget HD leagues, then you already know we're all in when it comes to fantasy football. The League returns this week for a third season and captures all of the insanity that happens when people stop being friends and start getting real... pretend. Despite its very intense focus on a group of friends and their over the top competition, as well as guest appearances by NFL stars, there's enough comedy there to keep watching whether you're watching tonight's game hoping a backup RB gets 75 yards and a touchdown or not.
(October 7th, FX, 10:30PM)
