After being nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film for Beaufort in 2008, Israeli writer/director Joseph Cedar has returned to the Oscar race with Footnote, Israel?s submission and a nominee for this year?s Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. Footnote is both a father/son tragedy and a comedy of errors played out against the backdrop of the Talmudic Studies department of the Hebrew University. In addition to the Oscar nomination, Cedar was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for Best Screenplay, and won Best Screenplay at the Cannes Film Festival. Sony Pictures Classics is releasing Footnote in America on March 9th. Cedar was recently in Los Angeles during the run-up to the Academy Awards and he and I enjoyed a delightful conversation. Cedar shared with me the culture of filmmaking in Israel, how his film came to be selected as an Oscar submission, and crafting Footnote.
Jackson Truax: You?ve said that the screenplay began from an initial idea that you had for the plot twist that comes late in the film. What was the process of developing that idea into a fully-formed screenplay?
Joseph Cedar: Once I had a basic plot, I started speaking to people in the Talmud department, and understanding the different issues that divide the schools of thought in that department. That shaped what the movie ended up being. Some of the conflicts that I just thought had a personal aspect to them, a father and son and their jealousy and their competition, turned out to be more than just that. It?s something that represents a dramatic divide within the Talmud research area, or field of thought. That gave the film much more richness that I enjoyed developing.
JT: Footnote explores the complex relationships between fathers and sons. What made you want to explore those themes as a writer and director?
Cedar: There?s inherent conflict between fathers and sons, just because there are two generations. If every generation was exactly the same, then the world wouldn?t make any progress. So there has to be something that divides generations. And there?s a personal side to that. Then there?s a larger, broader side to that. I think sons need to rebel, or the younger generation. It?s not necessarily a son. It can be a daughter. Rebellion is part of what moves society forward. And stubbornness, strictness, rigidness, inability to let go, is also a big part of what society needs. And fathers are representative of that, because if there?s just rebellion, then you lose touch with the heritage. It?s like a kite without a string. And the father is the string. And the son is a kite.
JT: From the inception of the screenplay, did you immediately see these ideas playing out simultaneously in a family as well as within a large, scholarly community?
Cedar: I heard from someone, a scholar, who told me that, ?When you write an academic book, there are two options. One is, you can address it to the one expert in the field that you?re writing. And you know that that one expert will appreciate all the nuances and the things that you put into it. Or, if you know that one expert is going to hate your book, you replace them with the masses, with the popular opinion.? In the cases of these characters, that one expert for the son, for Uriel, is his father. And since he knows his father is not going to approve of the value of his work, he replaces him with the masses and he becomes a populist. Populism is not necessarily bad. It?s a fact. It exists? They both exist in the same establishment. But one?s a purist, the other is a populist, and they both are needed.
JT: The other theme the film plays with is where the search for truth collides with university department politics, and how bureaucracy and hubris impede furthering knowledge and the search for truth. What made those themes important for you to explore?
Cedar: They?re just really relevant. You put it nicely. It?s a conflict I live with as a filmmaker? First of all, there?s a questions of if there is a truth? I can give you a concrete example. There?s a cinematographer that I wanted to work with who was really, very clear about what the images need to serve. He said, ?Every scene has one composition, one shot, that is right for the scene. And everything else is a way to ruin that one proper shot. Because that?s the truth of the scene.? And from my point of view, knowing how important it is to have options and alternatives and getting to the editing room with an ability to fix things. I needed more than just that one image that he thought was right. We just couldn?t work together, because I needed a little compromise and some flexibility. And he had just one way to do something. ?This is the truth. This is what it is. And everything else is contaminating our work.?? And they?re many examples where I find myself compromising a truth in service of communicating to a larger audience.
JT: I know you went to Hebrew University, but studied philosophy and theater history. How well did you know the culture you portray in Footnote? Did you have to do a lot of research in crafting the film?
Cedar: My close social circle is similar to the one in the film. So I don?t know if I was relying on my own time in the university. But around my family, around my friends, these characters exist. So it?s not foreign to me.
JT: When you started to write and direct a film about scholars and texts and university department politics, how did you know that this story could feel very cinematic?
Cedar: I didn?t. It was something that I wanted to deal with. And I hoped it would interest someone. My producers took a risk and were willing to get into this because they were also intrigued by the material. But none of us had any way to foresee that the film would interest a large audience. There?s nothing in this film that would have stood the test of marketability before the film was made.
JT: The film deals with these very serious ideas, but in a way that feels satirical, and borders on farcical at times. But the film ultimately ends up feeling like a drama. How did you find where to walk that fine line in the ending as well as throughout the film?
Cedar: Intuition. The tone is the one illusive part of the process. You don?t know what influences the tone. Music is obviously a big part of the tone. The actor?s body language is a part. But it?s not something that you really control. So you just hope that somehow all the people involved come together in a consistent tone that the audience will appreciate. But it?s not something that you really control.
JT: Shlomo Bar Aba who plays the father is a well-known comedic actor in Israel. By casting him, were you making a conscious decision that the film was going to veer towards the satirical?
Cedar: It?s a decision. I?m not sure how conscious it is. Of everything that this actor brings to the screen, he?s right for the character. I don?t know if I can articulate exactly why. He felt right.
JT: The movie has so much well-crafted dialogue, but the last fifteen minutes or so have very little. How did you know what you didn?t need to write, and what could be portrayed through performance nuance or music or the camera?
Cedar: The last scene is a scene that is dealt with exclusively through the paranoid perspective of the father character. It allowed us to give the audience an entrance into what he?s experiencing that has nothing to do with the story. Just the experience of being at this event, and believing that you don?t belong there, and that everyone knows it. So dialogue seemed incidental to that.
JT: You?re a celebrated and successful filmmaker in Israel. What?s the process of making films there, and how is it different from in America?
Cedar: I don?t really know how it works here. The Israeli industry has a nice naivet?, in that most films are made by writer/directors that have a story that they?re passionate about, and are somehow able to raise the modest budget that is required. There?s not much of a commercial side to the industry. There is some, but it?s not the driving force. That is, I think, a pretty good thing. I?m pretty sure that?s one of the biggest differences between my experiences in Israel and what is required here. Although, I have met producers here that share that sentiment, and want to make films that are important to the filmmakers and hope that they?ll do commercially well, but that?s not necessarily the one goal.
JT: What was Israel?s process of selecting Footnote to be the country?s official entry for the Academy Awards?
Cedar: Israel has an Academy, of about 800 or 900 members that vote every year, like the American Academy Awards, in different categories. The film that is voted as the best film of the year is the one that?s submitted to the Oscars.
JT: You were also nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for Best Screenplay. What does it mean to you to be recognized in that why by the American Independent Film community?
Cedar: It?s a good community. I have a lot of respect for the American Independent Film Community. Probably more than the studio films that are made here. So I?m very happy that they invited us to their awards ceremony.
JT: What would winning the Oscar for Footnote mean to you at this point in your life and career?
Cedar: I don?t know. I could think of many advantages to not winning. There are a few to winning as well. But, I don?t know. There?s so much luck involved. So, who knows? The excitement has to do with that possibility.
JT: Regardless of how the Oscar race plays out, Sony Pictures Classics is releasing the film in America on March 9th. When the film opens, what do you think Footnote has to offer audiences that is unique?
Cedar: I don?t really want to compare it to other films. I think that?s one of the nice things about this film is that you can?t compare it to other films. It?s a little different. It?s so hard to get audiences into the theaters. If we have something that?s slightly different and that?s surprising in some way, that sounds like a good excuse to go to the movie theater.

Lawyers: cocaine on capsized cruise captain's hair
ROME (AP) ? Experts and lawyers representing survivors of the capsized Costa Concordia cruise ship said Saturday that traces of cocaine were found on a sample of the ship captain's hair.
However, cocaine was not found within the hair, or in his urine, which would have indicated that he had used the drug. The lawyers are demanding a repeat of the tests, claiming the samples from Capt. Francesco Schettino may have been contaminated or mislabeled.
Italian consumer protection group Codacons is representing some survivors of the shipwreck of the cruise liner, which rammed a reef near a Tuscan island the night of Jan. 13. Under Italian law, those attaching civil suits to a criminal case must be informed of, and allowed to monitor, evidence and other developments in the probe.
The results found by a court-appointed expert are "very strange," spokesman Stefano Zerbi told The Associated Press by telephone. The group is raising the possibility that the samples "more than anything else, had been badly preserved and contamination might have resulted," Zerbi said.
Prosecutors are investigating Schettino for alleged manslaughter, causing a shipwreck and abandoning his ship before all passengers and crew were evacuated. Thirty-two people are believed to have perished, including 15 whose bodies have not been found.
A statement on Codacons' website also contended that Schettino had told investigators he had taken tranquilizers but that no traces of that medication were found in either the hair or the urine.
Codacons said its experts are contending that the container holding the urine sample wasn't properly sealed. It said the results as they stand indicate a "strange, passive contamination", in which cocaine somehow got onto Schettino's hair even though he wasn't using the drug.
The prosecutor's office in Grosseto, Tuscany, was closed Saturday, as was the law office of the attorney defending Schettino, who is under house arrest in his home near Naples.
The consumer group on Friday also asked prosecutors to order DNA testing of the samples to confirm they are indeed those of Schettino, to eliminate the possibilities the samples were accidentally mislabeled or switched.
It is also seeking clarification as to which hair strands were taken, and whether they were snipped at the roots. Zerbi said the samples were taken on Jan. 17, a few days after the accident.
The Concordia's hull was speared by the reef after the ship cruised close to the island of Giglio in what many contend was a publicity stunt. Schettino has contended that the reef was not on maritime maps, but the reef is well known to sailors. He also insisted he didn't abandon the cruise liner.
The Concordia was carrying some 4,200 passengers and crew on a week's cruise on its standard route when it crashed into the reef during dinner a couple of hours after leaving an Italian port.

DETROIT (AP) ? Rick Santorum is stepping into Mitt Romney's old backyard to talk about the economy ? a direct challenge to the Republican front-runner on the topic Romney considers his own.
The former Pennsylvania senator is set Thursday to address the Detroit Economic Club, just 23 miles from where Romney went to high school. Now surging in national polls, Santorum is showing greater confidence in what should be safe territory for the longtime GOP front-runner.
Romney not only grew up in Michigan, he is the son of a former governor. And his family members have been deeply involved in state politics for decades.
Despite the inherent advantages for his rival, Santorum vowed earlier in the week to "plant our flag" in Michigan, which hosts a presidential primary Feb. 28. He begins to make good on that promise Thursday, even as Romney campaigns elsewhere in the state.
"I think the stakes for Santorum are enormous, especially with the background and depth Romney has here," said Jeff Timmer, a former executive director of the Michigan GOP who isn't affiliated with either campaign. "If Santorum has any hope of winning here in two weeks, he's going to have to begin showing how he's going to connect with Michigan voters."
Romney is scheduled to speak to a suburban Detroit chamber of commerce at roughly the same time as Santorum's economic address, which would offer a deviation from the social issues he usually emphasizes.
Santorum, whose grandfather was a coal miner, is expected to draw on his blue-collar roots as he appeals to Republican voters in this working-class city. The appearance comes hours after his campaign released tax returns showing his average income exceeded $990,000 over three recent tax years.
Santorum sought to downplay Michigan expectations while talking to reporters earlier in the week, but he hopes to score a victory that could be a huge embarrassment for Romney. The former Massachusetts governor has struggled to persuade his party's most conservative segments to embrace him.
"We think we can plant our flag there and do well, and hopefully finish a good strong second," Santorum said of Michigan.
The visit coincides with a budding ad war. Santorum released a Michigan television ad the day before the speech that features a gun-toting Romney impersonator shooting mud at a cardboard cutout of Santorum. An announcer says Romney's "negative attack machine" is on "full throttle." He accuses Romney and groups that support him of "brutally attacking fellow Republicans."
Sensing a threat, Romney and his allies are running television ads across Michigan as well. And local Romney supporters will host a conference shortly before the speech on "Rick Santorum's unapologetic defense of big labor and big spending," according to the Romney campaign.
Santorum's plans Thursday will also take him to the same venue as Romney's wife, Ann. Santorum is scheduled to deliver the keynote address at the Oakland County Lincoln Day Dinner, an event Ann Romney also plans to attend.
Santorum's confidence comes, in part, from a working-class message crafted in Pennsylvania.
"We think we can do well in Michigan. We think it works for us from the standpoint of the kind of state that I'm used to running in," he said earlier in the week. "Michigan and Pennsylvania have a lot of similarities."
Santorum often cites his "Made in America" proposals that would reduce corporate income taxes on manufacturing from 35 percent to zero, hoping to rebuild that segment of the economy. The proposal also increases the research and development tax credit from 14 percent to 20 percent, a move he says would add new jobs in high-tech industries.

'Tornados' created inside electron microscopes
ScienceDaily (Feb. 16, 2012) ? Researchers from the University of York are pioneering the development of electron microscopes which will allow scientists to examine a greater variety of materials in new revolutionary ways.
The team, headed by Professor Jun Yuan and Professor Mohamed Babiker, from the University's Department of Physics has created electron beams with orbital angular momentum -- electron vortex beams -- which will open the way to many novel applications including the more efficient examining of magnetic materials.
Electron microscopes use a beam of electrons to illuminate a specimen and produce a magnified image, allowing scientists to investigate atomic arrangements. Compared to conventional electron beams, electron vortex beams improve the resolution and sensitivity of imaging, which is key when determining the structure of biological specimens such as proteins. They also have applications in the manipulation of nano-scale objects such as atoms and molecules.
As the electron vortex consists of moving charged particles, there is a magnetic field associated with the vortex. This magnetic field will be invaluable in examining magnetic materials, enabling the nanoscale magnetic structure to be imaged.
The York team has created a design for a holographic mask to generate an electron vortex beam and now plans to use this to improve the imaging capabilities of the electron microscope in its York-JEOL nanocentre.
Details of York's latest work -- part of the research by second year PhD student Sophia Lloyd -- showing that orbital angular momentum of electron beams with vortex structure are more efficient than light for probing atomic magnetism, are published in the February edition of the Physical Review Letters.
Professor Yuan said: "The introduction of vortex beams into electron microscopy, with its screw-like revolving wave front -- much like tornados, will revolutionise the study of magnetic nanostructures, as well as creating new applications in terms of nanoparticle manipulation and trapping, and edge contrast detection."
Professor Babiker, an expert in light vortex research, added: "Optical vortex beams, created using beams of light photons, have been studied for the past 20 years. They have found a great many applications, most notably in fine scale manipulation of single molecules and nano-objects in so-called optical tweezers and optical spanners.
"Research being carried out at York is intended to further current understanding of electron vortices so that a similarly broad range of applications can be realised."

New Blood Thinner May Prevent Blood Clots During Cancer Treatment (HealthDay)
WEDNESDAY, Feb. 15 (HealthDay News) -- A new blood-thinning medication called semuloparin reduces the risk of blood clots in people undergoing certain cancer treatments, new research shows.
When people with cancer are treated with chemotherapy, they have an increased risk of developing blood clots (venous thromboembolism). These clots can be dangerous, and have the potential to cause heart attacks or strokes.
This new drug reduced the risk of blood clots by 64 percent, according to the study, which was funded by Sanofi, the drug's manufacturer. Sanofi was also responsible for the analysis of the study's results.
Semuloparin, which is not currently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, didn't appear to increase the risk of excessive bleeding, which can be a side effect of blood thinners.
"Thromboembolism and the effects are very significant," said Dr. Stephanie Bernik, chief of surgical oncology at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. Even if blood clots don't cause life-threatening complications, they can cause lifelong problems, such as pain and a decreased ability to exercise, she explained.
"What's interesting about this paper is that they're decreasing the rate of thromboembolism without increasing bleeding. This needs to be confirmed in other studies, but this drug may play an important role for cancer patients in the future," said Bernik, who was not involved with the research.
The current study included more than 3,000 people from 47 countries. All had been diagnosed with cancer, including cancers of the lung, pancreas, stomach, colon, rectum, bladder or ovary.
The study volunteers were randomly assigned to one of two groups. One group received treatment with semuloparin, which is a type of heparin, while they were undergoing chemotherapy. The other group received a placebo.
The medication or the placebos were given as an injection once a day. Treatment lasted an average of 3.5 months.
Blood clots occurred in just 1.2 percent of those taking semuloparin compared to 3.4 percent of those on the placebo, according to the study.
The incidence of any type of excessive bleeding was 2.8 percent for the semuloparin group and 2.0 percent in those on placebo. Major bleeding occurred in 1.2 percent of those on semuloparin and 1.1 percent of those on placebo.
Results of the study are published in the Feb. 16 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.
In addition to preventing clots, heparin medications may also help fight cancer tumors, according to the authors of an accompanying editorial in the same issue of the journal.
"This study by itself did not show any effect on mortality, but when we included it in a meta-analysis, we found that there is a likely survival benefit," said one of the editorial's authors, Dr. Elie Akl, an associate professor of medicine at the State University of New York at Buffalo.
The meta-analysis done by Akl and his co-author reviewed 11 studies including more than 6,000 people taking heparin medications during chemotherapy. They concluded that for every 1,000 people being treated with chemotherapy for cancer, there would be 30 fewer deaths if people were also treated with heparin during their chemotherapy. They also estimated that there would be 20 fewer blood clots. And, they estimated that there would be one more major bleeding episode and five more minor bleeding episodes if everyone on chemotherapy were to receive heparin treatment.
"Patients with cancer, who have a low risk of bleeding and who have no problem with injecting themselves with heparin, are likely to benefit in terms of survival from heparin treatment," he said.
What isn't yet clear, Akl said, is if heparin would provide more or less benefit depending on the type of cancer someone has, and how far advanced the cancer is. He said that there are currently six different studies under way to help answer those questions. The cost of the medication is also unclear, since it has not been approved for use in the United States yet.

Ohio justice rejects death penalty law he wrote (AP)
COLUMBUS, Ohio ? As a young state senator 30 years ago, Paul Pfeifer helped write Ohio's death penalty law. Today, as the senior member of the state Supreme Court, he's trying to eliminate it.
It's not uncommon for sitting judges to change their mind on the death penalty ? U.S. Supreme Court Justice Harry Blackmun famously said in 1994 he would no longer "tinker with the machinery of death" ? but Pfeifer may be the only one to argue so ardently against a capital punishment law he himself created, and yet continue to rule on death penalty cases.
"I have concluded that the death sentence makes no sense to me at this point when you can have life without the possibility of parole," Pfeifer said in his most recent public comments, testifying in December in favor a bill to abolish Ohio's law. "I don't see what society gains from that."
After the U.S. Supreme Court declared capital punishment unconstitutional in 1972, states spent several years rewriting their laws; those enacted by Florida, Georgia and Texas ultimately met the court's threshold for constitutionality. Other states had to follow those models to have their laws upheld. Ohio's first attempt, in 1974, was found unconstitutional, but the second try, when Pfeifer was chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, was enacted in 1981 and has never been successfully challenged. Lawmakers pledged at the time to draft a law reserved for the most heinous murders.
At least two county prosecutors say Pfeifer should stop ruling on death sentences, including Hamilton County prosecutor Joe Deters, who said that Pfeifer's actions were inappropriate. "It gives rise to a credible inference that he cannot be fair to both sides," Deters said recently.
Pfeifer's position is unusual but on solid legal ground as long as he keeps his opinions out of his rulings, said Marianna Bettman, a University of Cincinnati law professor and former state appeals court judge.
Ohio has 148 inmates on death row. Executions are temporarily on hold while federal courts review the state's lethal injection procedures, but that delay is not expected to last forever. The Democrat-sponsored bill to abolish the death penalty has little chance of passing.
Pfeifer, a Republican, has always charted his own course on the court. For years he was a member of a foursome ? two Democrats and two moderate Republicans ? dubbed "the Gang of Four" for a series of 4-3 rulings that critics said were anti-business and favored Democrats and their causes. He's also not afraid of mud-slinging: In his spare time, the lifelong farmer raises Black Angus cattle.
Pfeifer had been on the court only two years when, in 1994, he dissented on a vote upholding the death penalty for a man sentenced to death for shooting his ex-girlfriend at the elementary school where she worked as a custodian. Already, he appeared to be having his doubts, writing that "the death penalty is special" and should be "reserved for those committing what the state views as the most heinous of murders." That defendant, John Simko, died of natural causes on death row in 1997.
Pfeifer made similar statements in court opinions over the years. He took his position public in 2001, calling unsuccessfully for an independent panel to review the law. He began to complain that prosecutors were overusing the statute, seeking death sentences in domestic quarrels that went bad instead of for the worst of the worst killers.
He often cites the case of Richard Nields, who murdered his girlfriend in their southwestern Ohio home in 1997, then stole her car and travelers' checks, as an example of overreaching by prosecutors.
"This case is not about robbery," Pfeifer wrote in his dissent to the court's 2001 decision upholding Nields' death sentence. "It is about alcoholism, rage and rejection and about Nields' inability to cope with any of them." Ultimately, Gov. Ted Strickland agreed and in 2010 changed Nields' sentence to life without parole.
In January 2011, Pfeifer made his strongest statements to date, calling on Gov. John Kasich to empty death row.
Pfeifer says he's required as a judge to take positions to make laws better, hence his current stand. He's also required to rule according to the law and the Constitution, which he says he does. Ohio Supreme Court Chief Justice Maureen O'Connor says she's comfortable Pfeifer is following the law and not showing bias.
Since 2001, Pfeifer has written the majority opinion upholding death sentences in five cases, dissented in two others and upheld death sentences while disagreeing on aspects of the decision in four other cases.
As recently as December, Pfeifer set an execution date, signing the order for a man who raped and killed his girlfriend's 3-year-old daughter.
Ohio first allowed the option of life without parole instead of a death sentence in 1996, then changed the law in 2005 to make it even easier to put killers behind bars for life while skipping death penalty charges altogether. Pfeifer says those changes have made the death penalty unnecessary.
State Rep. Ron Young, a conservative Republican, challenged Pfeifer on this point in December, arguing that removing the death penalty would create a slippery slope where eventually life without parole would be challenged as too harsh.
Pfeifer's experience as a death penalty supporter-turned-opponent is not isolated.
Gerald Kogan, a retired chief justice of the Florida Supreme Court who prosecuted death penalty cases early in his legal career, now says the death penalty should be abolished, with the possible exception of worst of the worst defendants such as Osama bin Laden or a mass serial killer.
Rudy Gerber helped write Arizona's death penalty law in the 1970s but now opposes capital punishment and represents death row defendants trying to escape the law he created.
In California, Don Heller authored a 1978 ballot initiative that created the state's death penalty law. Thirty years later, with more than 700 inmates on death row, Heller has changed course and is advocating the law's demise, saying it's too prone to human error.
