I am looking to find out the rough costs of SEO for a classified car website selling cars on finance. My original plan was to employ someone full time in house but I am struggling to find somebody suitable. I want to get into at least the top 5/6 results. I know this will not happen over night and that it will be expensive for this sector, but how expensive will it be?

You might want to share your website and get it reviewed so that people can recommend what needs to be done and what kind of seo service you would need and the eventual cost. If it needs work from scratch then an seo provider would give you a quote. You should check with them.
