Man charged over threatening letters sent to Congress

PORTLAND, Oregon (Reuters) - A federal grand jury in Oregon returned an indictment on Friday against a man arrested in connection with the mailing of about 100 envelopes containing a suspicious powdery substance and threatening letters to members of Congress and the news media.

The two-count indictment charged Christopher Lee Carlson, 39, of the Portland area, with one count of mailing a threatening communication to a member of Congress and one count of mailing a letter threatening to use a biological weapon to a U.S. senator.

The white powder found in all the envelopes examined so far, which were postmarked in Portland, has tested negative for toxic substances, the U.S. Attorney's Office in Portland said in a statement announcing the indictment. Carlson was expected to be arraigned in U.S. District Court on Monday.
